The problem with Shallow / Commerical mouthpieces is that as the cup gets shallower, the margin for error with what works for an individual player gets dramatically smaller. What makes a mouthpiece feel easier to play loudly and make sizzle is less cup volume. The trouble is with how to reduce the cup volume in a way that doesn't interefere with the free vibration of the lips.
Every player has lips that enter the cup differently, and how they enter the cup changes:
- Between Registers
- Between Dynamics
- As one changes the amount of pressure being used
- As one tires or encounters some amount of lip swelling.
Everyone's lips will protrude differently and so there is a need for a variety of cup shapes that accomodate the way this occurs.
The result of all this is that I have created a line of commerical cup shapes that allow:
- For different baseline amounts of lip intrusion
- Different "alpha angles" which can provide support but also can shut of the vibration or produce an awful sound if too high.
- Different cup depths which allow for more or less lip penetration between register and/or as mouthpiece pressure is applied.
This is combined with a rounded, cushion rim, makes it possible for virtually everyone to find something that will work FOR THEM.
Available in whatever diameter you like :-)
Cup Options:

STAR CUP
The star cup is the most bowl shaped cup, with the most vertical drop from the rim. This provides a lot of lip room for those who are accustomed to very deep, generally large diameter mouthpieces which tend to encourage one to put a lot of lip in the cup. The support is provided by the bottom of the cup and the tighter throat entrance rather than by the slope of the upper cup. This cup is not going to be the most efficient option for the majority of players and was added primarily with orchestral musician in mind. For these players, this cup will assist them with achieving volume and brightness in the top end without requiring them to adopt a different approach to playing. Great for pops work or for those times you want a bit of help with Ein Heldenleben or West Side Story, and similar demanding works.
For the average player, however, this cup is likely to feel pretty great at first and then to tire you out quickly.
LEAD CUP
The Lead cup features a very generous amount of lip room at the top of the cup combined with a convex V shaped lower cup and throat entrance. The comparatively long distance to the throat allows the sound to have more body and depth than is typical for a commercial type mouthpiece. This makes it a particularly good choice for “Pops” players or orchestral players who want to keep as much tone as possible in the lower and middle registers but add some efficiency and support for demanding upper register playing.
Z-M CUP
The Z-M cup provides a little more support at the top of the cup and a little less cup volume without being inaccessible for most players. This makes it a more efficient mouthpiece than the Lead Cup and will feel zippier and develop a nice sizzle when pushed.
The Z-M cup and Z-D options are fantastic middle-of-the-road options. Players who usually play on something like a 1.5C or 3C will find these make their life easier and won’t feel too alien to switch to when they need some extra volume and sizzle in the top end. Great for those that just need something that has their back for those occasions they need it. The Z-S if it fits your face is a bit of a weapon!
SCREAM CUP
The SCREAM cup features a higher cup-entry angle (AKA “Alpha Angle”) that provides additional support. For those who can take advantage of that support, the SCREAM cup will reward them with surprisingly effortless playing in the upper register while retaining a full sound in the lower registers.
The SCREAM cup crosses into “high note mouthpiece” territory but players will generally find it more forgiving than many of the commonly available options and with three cup depths to choose from, you can enjoy the efficiency while avoiding the common “bottoming out” issue.
V Cup
The V Cup begins with the very shallow V-S cup that is similar to one of the so called “Holy Grail” mouthpieces that Maynard played for a time. The V-S is likely to be useful only to a select few players but the V-M and V-D cups open up this design to more players. Many people will be surprised how easy a V cup plays provided the slope of the cup works with your lip intrusion without creating issues.
These V-Cups work because as the player's lips intrude, the walls of the cup assist in focusing the aperture. This can make the upper register feel almost shockingly easy for a player who suits this style of cup.
The V-M and V-D cups will be much more forgiving for players than the V-S cup.
Everyone should try at least one V cup in my opinion because they have the potential to really "show you the light" if you're one of the players who they work for.
BACKBORE OPTIONS
The lead backbore is available in three sizes: Small, Medium and Large. If in doubt, go for the Lead M, which should feel fairly neutral in terms of the blow, neither stuffy or wide open.
If you know you prefer a tight backbore, chose the Lead S, if you know you like to really move some air, choose the Lead L:

* A note about our Stainless Steel backbores:
We're currently trialing some alternative manufacturing processes that would allow us to make backbores accurate but very affordable through a combination of manufacturing processes, including reaming backbores to spec.
Right now, we're still working on improving the surface finish, but the following photos will give you an idea of what to expect. This is purely cosmetic and does not effect the way the mouthpiece plays or how it seals with the leadpipe. I think we'll be able to get this sorted out before we send any out, but just wanted to be completely transparent here!
We're always experimenting and looking for ways to make music fun and to make phenomenal products more affordable. We're pretty excited about how this approach is turning out, and will continue refining things from here :-)

STAR (Most lip room, Least lip support)
LEAD
Z
SCREAM
V (Least lip room, most lip support)
It depends what you already know from past experience. We reccomend everyone try the V-M or V-D as V cups can sometimes surprise you; the slope of the cup wall can work with your lip intrusion rather than merely accomodating it.
If you bottom out easily:
You should choose the Deep Cup options, including the Star, Lead and Z cup plus some medium cup options. We suggest the LEAD-M and the Z-M as the most friendly Medium Cup options for players with significant lip intrusion.
If you know you can play very shallow cups:
You should choose the Shallow versions of Z, Scream & V cups, plus some medium cup options like the Scream-M & V-M as well.
If you know you need a lot of lip room at the top of the cup:
Pick the medium and deep Star, Lead and Z cups.
